Ho Chi Minh City is easier to plan when you decide whether it is your arrival gateway, a focused two-to-four-day city block, or the base for a southern side trip. Solve the airport, neighbourhood and Mekong decisions first; the rest of the itinerary becomes much less noisy.

Where to stay: central convenience is a budget decision
District 1 is the simplest first-visit base when you want many sights, restaurants and pickup points within a compact area. It can cost more than peripheral districts, but a cheap room far away can give the saving back through extra rides and time.
Do not book by district label alone. Compare the actual hotel pin with the places you will repeat: Ben Thanh area, riverfront, walking streets, museums, tour pickup and your next transport connection.
Solve Tan Son Nhat before you land
Grab’s current airport guide uses a planning reference of roughly 7 km, 25–40 minutes and 120,000–200,000 VND between Tan Son Nhat and the HCMC centre. That is a provider reference, not a guaranteed quote for your flight or hotel.

Build city days by clusters, not by famous-name collection
HCMC traffic makes unnecessary cross-city movement expensive in time. Put nearby history, food and walking stops into the same half-day, then use ride-hail for the reposition that actually saves meaningful time.
The official War Remnants Museum currently lists the general adult ticket at 40,000 VND. That is a useful example of why HCMC does not need to be an expensive sightseeing city unless your plan adds premium tours, rooftop venues or repeated long transfers.
Mekong Delta: decide what experience you mean
“Go to the Mekong Delta” is too vague to book intelligently. A guided My Tho / Ben Tre-style day tour is designed to leave HCMC in the morning and return the same day. An independent Can Tho trip buys a different experience and usually needs an overnight to justify the transport.
