How much 14 days in Vietnam really costs

For a two-week trip in Vietnam, the route matters almost as much as the travel style. The same hotel and food standard can produce a very different total when you add more bases, transfers, flights and big-ticket experiences.

Quick answer: 14-day Vietnam budget by travel style

Backpacker solo10.5–16.1 million VND (~US$400–615)

Dorms or simple rooms, local-first food, mostly buses/trains and selective paid activities.

Smart-budget couple28.0–44.8 million VND (~US$1,070–1,710) for two

Good-value private rooms, selective ride-hail, better transport choices and around 3–5 paid experiences.

Comfort couple53.2–84.0 million VND (~US$2,030–3,210) for two

3–4 star or boutique hotels, regular restaurants, more private transport, flights and paid tours.

These are planning bands, not package quotes. A slow four-base trip can land lower in the range than a rushed six-base trip at the same hotel and food standard.

What the 14-day total includes

IncludedExcluded
AccommodationInternational airfare
Meals, coffee and waterTravel insurance
Normal local transportVisa fee if applicable
Intercity buses, trains or flights averaged over the routeShopping and tailoring
Ordinary paid activities averaged across the tripPremium tours/cruises/packages above the normal allowance
Small miscellaneous buffer

The model is built around the trip average. A transfer day can be expensive and a slow city day can be cheap; both can fit the same two-week plan.

Route assumption: how many bases is realistic in 14 days?

For most first-time travellers, 4–5 bases is a useful default.

Example 5-base routeNights
Hanoi3
Ninh Binh2
Hue2
Hoi An / Da Nang3
Ho Chi Minh City3

A simpler four-base version could remove or combine one stop. The point is not that these are the only good routes; it is to show how the number of bases changes both cash cost and usable time.

The transfer tax: the hidden cost of one more city

Every time you add a base, score four costs:

  1. Ticket cost. Bus, train or flight.
  2. First/last-mile cost. Rides to and from stations or airports.
  3. Lost usable hours. Check-out, waiting, travel time, check-in and recovery.
  4. Friction cost. Meals in transit, luggage storage, late arrival, poor sleep and convenience spending.

If adding one stop costs 700,000 VND (~US$27) in transport but also burns eight useful daylight hours, the real cost is not just 700,000 VND. That is why a four-base trip can offer better value than a six-base trip.

Backpacker solo: 10.5–16.1 million VND (~US$400–615) for 14 days

Assumptions: dorm beds or very simple guesthouses, local-first food, buses and trains for most longer moves, limited domestic flying and self-guided sightseeing plus selective paid days.

14-day componentIllustrative range
Accommodation2.5–3.9 million VND (~US$95–150)
Food and drink2.8–4.2 million VND (~US$105–160)
Local transport0.9–1.4 million VND (~US$35–55)
Intercity transport2.1–3.1 million VND (~US$80–120)
Activities1.4–2.4 million VND (~US$55–90)
Miscellaneous / buffer0.8–1.1 million VND (~US$30–40)

Fewer bases, buses/trains, more self-guided days and dorms push you lower. Big activities, frequent transfers, last-minute transport and private rooms push you upward.

Smart-budget couple: 28.0–44.8 million VND (~US$1,070–1,710) for 14 days

Assumptions: good-value private rooms in useful locations, local meals plus cafés/restaurants selectively, ride-hail when it saves time, one domestic flight or better-class long-distance transport where sensible, and around 3–5 paid experiences chosen for value.

14-day component for twoIllustrative range
Accommodation7.0–12.6 million VND (~US$265–480)
Food and drink6.3–9.1 million VND (~US$240–350)
Local transport2.1–3.5 million VND (~US$80–135)
Intercity transport6.3–9.1 million VND (~US$240–350)
Activities4.2–7.7 million VND (~US$160–295)
Miscellaneous / buffer2.1–2.8 million VND (~US$80–105)

This tier should spend on location, transfer efficiency and memorable activities rather than upgrading every room and meal. Two people also benefit from shared-room and shared-vehicle math.

Comfort couple: 53.2–84.0 million VND (~US$2,030–3,210) for 14 days

Assumptions: 3–4 star or boutique hotels, restaurants and cafés regularly, frequent ride-hail/private transfers, domestic flights when they save substantial time and paid experiences on multiple days.

14-day component for twoIllustrative range
Accommodation16.8–29.4 million VND (~US$640–1,125)
Food and drink11.2–15.4 million VND (~US$430–590)
Local transport4.2–7.0 million VND (~US$160–265)
Intercity transport8.4–12.6 million VND (~US$320–480)
Activities9.8–15.4 million VND (~US$375–590)
Miscellaneous / buffer2.8–4.2 million VND (~US$105–160)

Route design still matters at this level. Extra bases can mean more private transfers, more flights and more late-arrival convenience spending.

Budget by number of bases

3–4 basesStrongest value for many travellers

Lower transport spend, fewer hotel moves, slower pace and more usable days.

5 basesBalanced first-trip pace

Enough contrast without constant movement; often the sweet spot for two weeks.

6+ basesHigher transfer tax

More tickets, more first/last-mile costs, more check-in friction and more convenience spending.

VOAB’s starting recommendation for most first-time visitors with 14 days is 4–5 bases. Add a stop only if it clearly earns its time and cost.

What if I add one domestic flight?

Do not add only the fare. Add baggage or seat fees where applicable, transport to the departure airport, transport from the arrival airport, airport food/convenience spending and a time buffer for airport procedures.

A cheap headline fare can still be the right decision if it saves a long travel day. Compare like-for-like total cost and time.

What if I add a Ha Long day cruise?

Our 19 Aug 2026 research found one mainstream day-cruise product around US$39 (~1.02 million VND) at check time. Premium options can be much higher.

Treat the cruise as an explicit add-on rather than pretending it is already covered by a low daily food-and-bed number.

What if I add Ba Na Hills?

Our research found a 2026 adult entry/cable-car reference around 930,000 VND (~US$36) before transport and food extras.

For two travellers, the incremental trip cost is not only two tickets. Add transport from Da Nang/Hoi An plus meals and optional extras.

What if I upgrade the hotel for three nights?

Think in incremental cost:

  • current room: 600,000 VND/night (~US$23);
  • upgraded room: 1,500,000 VND/night (~US$57);
  • difference: 900,000 VND/night (~US$34);
  • three-night upgrade: +2.7 million VND (~US$103) to the couple trip.

A 2.7 million VND upgrade may be worth it for a beach break or anniversary stay; it may add little value on a one-night transfer stop.

How to cut your two-week cost without making the trip worse

  1. Remove one low-value hotel move. One fewer base can save a ticket, first/last-mile transfers and a half-day of friction.
  2. Compare door-to-door transport, not ticket price. An overnight train may replace a hotel night; a flight may save a day; a cheap flight may become less cheap after baggage and airport transfers.
  3. Share rooms and vehicles as a couple. This is one of the strongest structural savings.
  4. Stay near what you will actually use. A cheaper outer-area hotel can create repeated transport cost and time loss.
  5. Choose 2–4 high-value paid experiences. Slow days are part of the trip; every day does not need a paid tour.
  6. Keep flexible space. Weather and local conditions can change plans; pre-booking everything can turn sunk cost into bad travel decisions.

“Savings” that often backfire

Ultra-cheap flight without baggage math

The fare looks good; the full trip cost may not.

Cheapest hotel far from the itinerary

You save on the room and spend it back in transport and time.

Overnight transport before a demanding day

Saving one hotel night can be poor value if you lose the next day to exhaustion.

Six cities because “Vietnam is long”

Coverage is not the same as experience. More stops often reduce both value and enjoyment.

Costs excluded from the 14-day total

International airfare: origin-dependent and highly dynamic.

Visa: official e-visa fee is currently US$25 (~655,000 VND) single / US$50 (~1.31 million VND) multiple if applicable.

Travel insurance: traveller-specific.

Shopping and tailoring: discretionary.

Premium multi-day packages or private tours: add separately when they materially exceed the normal activity budget.

Planning a two-week Vietnam trip for 2027

Do not turn a 2026 budget into a fake 2027 quote.

Until a new evidence pass is complete, use the dated 2026 totals as a planning baseline and add a clearly labelled contingency for uncertainty. A 10% buffer can be useful for far-ahead planning, but it is not an inflation forecast.

FAQ

Is 14 days enough for Vietnam?

Yes, if you accept that you will not cover everything. Four or five bases can create a strong first trip without constant transfers.

How much should a solo backpacker budget for two weeks?

VOAB’s 2026 planning band is about 10.5–16.1 million VND (~US$400–615) in-country, excluding international flights, insurance and visa if applicable.

How much should a couple budget for two weeks?

A smart-budget couple can plan around 28.0–44.8 million VND (~US$1,070–1,710) total for two. A comfort-focused couple can plan around 53.2–84.0 million VND (~US$2,030–3,210).

Does this include domestic flights?

The planning totals include an allowance for intercity transport, but a route with multiple flights should be modelled explicitly because the average may no longer fit.

How many cities should I do in 14 days?

For most first-time visitors, 4–5 bases is a useful starting point. Add more only when the extra stop clearly earns the transfer cost and time.

Should I go north to south in two weeks?

You can, but the value depends on how many stops you add. A simple north–central–south spine can work; trying to include every famous destination usually creates transfer tax. For the daily assumptions behind these totals, see the Vietnam daily budget guide.
