Vietnam can be remarkably affordable to sleep in — but one ‘average hotel price’ is not very useful. Choose the room standard you actually want, then adjust for city, location, dates and the final price after taxes, service charges and promotions.

Why one “average hotel price in Vietnam” is misleading
A dorm bed in Hanoi, a family-run room in Hoi An and a beachfront resort can all appear in the same search session at prices separated by more than ten times.
Accommodation also behaves differently from many other trip costs: a private room is usually priced per room, not per person; location can create or remove repeated transport costs; and online travel agencies may show large promotions that make one night look artificially representative.
The useful question is not “What does a hotel in Vietnam cost?” It is “What does the room standard and location I actually want cost for my dates?”

Hanoi hotel prices: location matters as much as the room label
Our selected Hanoi search included a dorm around US$7 (~183,000 VND), a heavily discounted private double around US$15 (~393,000 VND) and a boutique/private double around US$30 (~786,000 VND).
Those numbers are evidence anchors, not Hanoi averages. Before choosing the cheapest card, decide whether you actually want the Old Quarter, French Quarter, West Lake or another part of the city. “Central Hanoi” is not one tiny block.
Hoi An shows why tier beats a national average
In one research window, Hoi An produced simple private-room examples around US$15–17, a boutique example around US$54, a resort around US$125 and a premium international-hotel example around US$268.
They are not contradictory prices. They are different products: Ancient Town convenience, rice-field quiet, beach access, breakfast, pools, room size and resort facilities all change what you are buying.
The hidden part of the hotel price: taxes, service charges and deals
Before comparing two rooms, open the final price details.
- VAT: is it already inside the displayed total?
- Service charge: included, excluded or bundled differently by rate plan?
- Breakfast: included or a paid add-on?
- Cancellation: refundable, partially refundable or non-refundable?
- Payment timing: pay now or at the property?
- Promotion: is the headline card showing a limited deal?
A 700,000 VND headline room with tax and breakfast extra may end up close to an 850,000 VND room with breakfast and flexible cancellation included.
Couples vs solo travellers: shared-room math
A private room is one of the strongest structural savings for two travellers.

Food, attraction tickets and most transport seats remain largely per person. The room does not. That is why VOAB uses separate couple budget models rather than multiplying the solo figure by two.
When paying more for location can actually be cheaper
Use incremental math instead of chasing the cheapest room.
Suppose Hotel A costs 700,000 VND/night and Hotel B costs 950,000 VND/night. The headline difference is 250,000 VND. If Hotel A creates two extra 100,000 VND rides every day plus an hour of friction, Hotel B is no longer meaningfully “250,000 VND more expensive”.
The exact threshold depends on your itinerary. Compare the whole stay, not only the room card.
Should you prepay for the cheapest rate?
The cheapest rate is often non-refundable. That can be sensible when your dates are fixed and a poor trade when weather, route changes or flight disruption may move your itinerary.
Saving 150,000 VND on a room is not a win if a changed route creates a lost 900,000 VND prepaid booking. For multi-stop travel, flexibility has real value.
