Vietnam transport cost · 2026
Compare the whole journey — not only the ticket
A cheap flight can stop being cheap after baggage and airport rides. A low train fare can still need a taxi at the other end. VOAB compares transport using the full door-to-door decision rather than the headline fare alone.
Quick answer: what transport usually costs
Official GrabCar city tables start around this level for the first 2 km, before distance, time and dynamic pricing.
A useful selected-route anchor for buses, vans and trains such as Hanoi → Ninh Binh.
Long rail or domestic-flight decisions need baggage, station/airport transfers and timing added to the fare.
The VOAB rule: compare door-to-door cost
For every mode, score the same seven things:
- Ticket or ride fare.
- First-mile transport to the station, office or airport.
- Last-mile transport to your actual accommodation.
- Baggage, seat or booking extras.
- Food and convenience spending during the transfer.
- Hotel-night effect if an overnight option replaces or creates a paid night.
- Time and friction.
We do not turn your time into a fake hourly dollar value. Time is a decision factor, not a universal price.
Grab and ride-hailing costs in Vietnam
Grab publishes city fare structures but also states that dynamic pricing can apply based on demand and supply.
| City · GrabCar 4-seat | Published minimum / first 2 km | After first 2 km |
|---|---|---|
| Hanoi | 25,000 VND (~US$1) | 8,500 VND/km + 400 VND/min |
| Ho Chi Minh City | 25,000 VND (~US$1) | 9,000 VND/km + 300 VND/min |
| Da Nang | 22,000 VND (~US$0.85) | 11,000 VND/km + 400 VND/min |
Ride-hail is best treated as a convenience lever. Use it where it materially saves time or removes friction; avoid turning every short movement into a car ride without thinking.
Bus and limousine van costs
Buses and vans cover many of the routes travellers actually use between nearby cities and visitor areas. Their main advantage can be pickup/drop-off convenience rather than the lowest possible ticket.
Selected Hanoi → Ninh Binh listings in the 20 August research pass showed many bus/limousine seats around 152,000–281,000 VND (~US$6–11), with selected van results around 199,000–220,000 VND (~US$8).
A 220,000 VND direct van to your accommodation can be better value than a 160,000 VND bus that creates two extra taxi rides. Confirm the exact endpoint before comparing prices.
Train costs: when rail wins
Selected Hanoi → Da Nang results in our final 20 August refresh showed Vietnam Rail standard seat/berth examples around US$30–42 (~786,000–1.10 million VND). Premium or private sleeper products can be materially higher.
Rail can make sense when the station endpoints are useful, you value a scenic or overnight journey, or the schedule replaces otherwise dead travel time.
A 15–18 hour train is not automatically worse because it is slower, and it is not automatically better because it is “local”. Compare it with what the alternative does to your actual trip.
Domestic flights: the headline-fare trap
Vietnam Airlines’ Hanoi → Da Nang route page currently advertises fares from 847,181 VND (~US$32) and warns that displayed fares are collected within the last 48 hours, may no longer be available and can have optional fees.
VietJet’s Hanoi → Ho Chi Minh City route page showed many selected August 2026 headline fares around 500,000 VND (~US$19) in the final refresh.
Before choosing the base fare, add checked baggage, seats if needed, both airport rides, food/convenience spending and the check-in/security buffer.
Flights are usually most valuable when they save a meaningful chunk of a travel day — not simply because the card price looks low.
Private transfers: compare the group total
A private car looks expensive when compared with one bus seat. For a family or group, compare like with like.
| Example for four travellers | Total | Per person |
|---|---|---|
| Private car | 1,800,000 VND (~US$69) | 450,000 VND (~US$17) |
| Van at 250,000 VND each | 1,000,000 VND (~US$38) | 250,000 VND (~US$10) |
The real premium to evaluate is 800,000 VND for the group, not “1.8 million versus 250,000”. A private vehicle becomes more rational with children, older relatives, heavy luggage, awkward endpoints or sightseeing stops.
Route comparison: Hanoi → Ninh Binh
| Mode | Selected Aug 2026 observation | Decision point |
|---|---|---|
| Train seat | ~152,000–199,000 VND (~US$6–8) / person | Good value if Ninh Binh station works for your accommodation. |
| Bus / limousine | ~152,000–281,000 VND (~US$6–11) / person | Pickup/drop-off can be more important than a small fare difference. |
| Selected van | ~199,000–220,000 VND (~US$8) / person | Confirm direct vs transfer and luggage. |
| Marketplace private/taxi example | ~780,000 VND (~US$30) / vehicle | Normalise by traveller count before comparing. |
Ninh Binh Railway Station, Ninh Binh City, Tam Coc, Trang An and your hotel are not the same endpoint. Read the dedicated Hanoi → Ninh Binh guide for the route-level decision.
Route comparison: Hanoi → Sapa
Current selected 12Go bus listings in the final 20 August refresh start around US$6.9 (~180,000 VND), with sleeper, cabin and VIP products rising into roughly the US$10–19 range.
Sapa has no railway station. A “train to Sapa” means rail to Lao Cai plus another road transfer uphill. That extra leg belongs in the price and time comparison.
For many travellers a direct daytime bus or limousine is simpler; for others the overnight rail experience is worth the transfer.
Route comparison: Hanoi → Da Nang
| Option | Selected evidence anchor | Do not forget |
|---|---|---|
| Vietnam Rail | ~US$30–42 (~786,000–1.10m VND) standard seats/berths | Station access, overnight timing and the 15–18h journey. |
| Vietnam Airlines | From 847,181 VND (~US$32) on current route page | Airport rides, baggage, check-in buffer and live availability. |
| Low-cost airline | Lower headline fares can appear | Base fare may exclude baggage, seat or other extras. |
The overlapping headline prices are exactly why “train vs flight” needs a door-to-door comparison rather than a slogan.
How couples and groups change transport math
Flights, trains and most bus/van seats are priced per person. Grab, taxi and private vehicles can be shared. The cheapest mode for one traveller can therefore be different from the cheapest sensible mode for four.
When comparing a car with a bus, divide the vehicle quote by the actual traveller count before deciding.
The cost of one extra city
An extra stop costs more than one ticket: departure ride, ticket, arrival ride, luggage storage, convenience food, lost sightseeing hours, awkward check-in timing and another chance for delays.
This is the transfer tax used in our Vietnam 2-Week Budget. A four-base route can cost less and feel better than a six-base route at the same hotel and food standard.
When should you book transport?
There is no reliable national rule such as “always book exactly X days ahead”.
Book earlier when…
- you travel on a holiday or busy weekend;
- you need a specific sleeper berth or flight time;
- you have a tight onward connection; or
- your group needs seats together.
Stay flexible when…
- weather can change the route;
- there are many departures; or
- your itinerary has buffer days.
How VOAB checks transport prices
We prefer official sources for fare structures and operator policies, and use marketplaces to observe selected-date inventory, classes and current route options.
Every dynamic observation is dated. A selected fare is described as an observation, not a fixed national price.

FAQ
Is Grab cheap in Vietnam?
For short rides, official base fare structures are low by international standards, but the exact app quote changes with distance, time, service type and dynamic pricing.
Are trains cheaper than flights in Vietnam?
Sometimes, but not always. Selected Hanoi → Da Nang evidence shows standard train prices can overlap with airline headline fares. Compare airport/station transfers, baggage and time.
Should I fly from Hanoi to Da Nang?
A flight is often the fastest option and can be good value. If you want an overnight rail experience, have flexible time or prefer station-to-station travel, the train can still be rational.
How much should I budget for transport each day?
Do not force transport into one identical daily number. A city day may cost almost nothing; a flight or major transfer day can cost over 1 million VND per person.
